At the beginning of November, Bradbury employee Emma Fahy set off on a fantastic adventure in the name of a very worthy cause. Emma and a group of friends flew out to the world’s largest hot desert, the Sahara, to undertake a 73 mile trek in just 4 days!
The purpose of this journey was to raise not only funds but awareness of an issue very close to Emma’s heart, Ovarian Cancer. According to Cancer Research, Ovarian cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women in the UK with around 6,600 new cases of ovarian cancer diagnosed each year in the UK, that is around 125 women every week. Like any charity, the more money raised the better, but to increase awareness is priceless as to recognise symptoms early gives a better chance of recovery. Emma’s trek has seen her organise fundraisers in the months up to the trek, feature in the local paper as well as BBC evening news so she has done a fantastic job fronting her campaign against this terrible disease.
Emma trained hard in the months before the trek putting her hiking skills into practice, walking home from Bradburys on Staden Lane in the pouring rain is enough to prepare someone for anything!! So when the time finally came to head off to the Sahara, Emma was raring and ready to go! However, her excitement did fade a little during the 13 hour windy mini bus journey through the mountains to the desert!
Once they arrived in the desert and had recovered from the bus ride, Emma and her team set off on their 73 mile trek. With the sun beaming down, only sand for miles upon miles and nothing on the horizon to aim for. the group had to entertain each other to help pass the miles! Despite the hard times the desert constantly rewarded the group with fantastic memories. One of Emma’s finest came after climbing up a steep ridge, walking along the top to then get to run down a huge sand dune!
When the group was finding it tough, they only had to remember the reason why they were there to motivate them to carry on, and sure enough, they all completed the 73 miles within the 4 days. With their adventure complete, the group then looked forward to returning home to talk of their time in the desert. They even looked forward to the cold English weather!
Everyone at Bradburys would like to say huge congratulations to Emma and those who joined her taking on something great for a special cause. All that is left now is to total up the money……
